Hydroquinone is a topical skin lightening agent that decreases the formation of melanin in the skin. It is often referred to as as a bleaching cream as it lightens pigment clusters. The effect is reversible by exposure to ultraviolet light. Since sun exposure may reverses the effect, a sunscreen is usually mixed into the preparation.

Hydroquinone is used to treat darkened skin areas including freckles, age spots, brown spots and melasma. This agent decreases the production of  melanosomes (melanin pigment granules) in the skin's pigmented cells. This is done by inhibiting tyrosinase activity, an enzyme needed to make melanin.
